| Tasting # 56: Mini Madness 7: Hunting the Dirty Bird (11-DEC-2006) | |||||||||||||||||||||
| Notes | Every time I did a blind taste during Mini Madness I'd have to take the empty back and look into the cabinet where, invariably, Wild Turkey was looking back at me. Well now I'm going hunting for it. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| Smell | It smells like a bourbon, mildly at least, but the 101 certainly comes through. Corn syrup and spice. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| Taste | Ah, the wild turkey. How Could I pass up the opportunity to try the "dirty bird"? The taste is surprisingly smooth at full power, bourbon molasses and apple vinegar with some smoke and a lot of oak. These increase with the addition of water and help convert some of the burn over to a smooth warmth. The high syrup you get from some bourbons is still there a bit, and is not my favorite bourbon flavor. I'm still pleasantly surprised at Wild Turkey. The burn isn't terrible even at full proof, and the flavors (or at least the flavors I favor); improve with a touch or three of water. The smoke and fruit sweetness combine with a lot of charred wood for a stiff, hearty taste that's plenty drinkable. I'm pushing this one into fairly recommedable range, low 60s. | ||||||||||||||||||||
