Tasting # 414: More Honey Bourbon  (11-JAN-2010)
NotesTo my knowledge Link to another review Wild Turkey had the first and second major-brand honey liqueurs on the market. Their Link to another review latest is quite drinkable straight, if you're a fan of bourbon and honey. Now with Red Stag challenging SoCo for the cherry side of things, Evan Williams has tossed their hat into the ring with a Honey Bourbon.

Impression
Understated label. A big bee, some yellow text on transparent film (against amber, which makes it tough to read at a distance). Otherwise I like it.
SmellHrm. There's honey alright, but it's also brimming with oranges and raisins and a lot of sweets. The bourbon is shy, I'm not getting anything but a tiny hint of alcohol. If I bury my nose in the glass I can get a little applewood smoke and hay.
TasteRaw sweetness is the first flavor, just a wall of honey-flavored sugar that turns very sticky. The top is naval oranges, orange taffy and creamsicles, which more than a bit too much. The fade is fast and somehow even stickier than the front and finally there's a hint of bourbon yelling from the back of the orchestra, too bad the rest of the musicians are playing sugar. The finish is more of a linger. The honey flavors and some slightly sour rye hold out forever as a sticky resin on your tongue. Ultimately not my type of drink. The nose was nice and complex with some interesting fruit but the glass is naught but sweet oranges, light honey and a ton of sugar of varied forms. Maybe it mixes well, maybe you'll like the unabashed candy rush, maybe it won't score under 50.
