| Tasting # 413: Starting 2010 with a 2008 (04-JAN-2010) | |||||||||||||||||||||
| Notes | Joined a friend for dinner at an Irish Pub and he insisted we explore their top shelf. I still have a bit of the 2006 version at home and this gives me a glimpse of how the premier Irish Blend changes (or doesn't) from year to year. Plus I'm not going to buy a full bottle of this. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| 1st Impression | Same Midleton Box, which I like. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| Smell | Bigger nose than I remember from the '06, slightly sharper malt plus whole wheat and salted butter. The grain scents are really tight with a little ginger. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| Taste | The taste is similarly bigger, less subtle than the '06 and bringing a lot more to the table. The malt isn't quite so green, now it's more toasty and dry in the front with just a bit of prickle. The butter builds to a good, expansive top end: whole wheat bread, buttermilk and a bit of paper. Just a touch sharp here. Then we move gracefully into a slightly fruity finish where you get more wood than malt. Well built and the new louder voice is a welcome step up and out from the '06. | ||||||||||||||||||||
