| Tasting # 399: The only grainy-picture Rye (14-OCT-2009) | |||||||||||||||||||||
| Notes | So here we are, nearing the end of the grainy pictures. I realize I front loaded this with some rarities, but that's how I went after them. And really, can you blame me? So, here's the only Rye to be found amidst the Macallans and Bourbons. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| 1st Impression | I like Austin Nichols (Wild Turkey) and while I dislike ryes in general the bottle is rather nice. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| Smell | It smells... well, like rye. A bit more bourbon-ish than most others, this has a decent body of wood to support all that airy rye scent. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| Taste | The body shows up in the flavor, thankfully. There's a lot of bourbon history here, naturally, which helps steady and support the apples and raisins that show up throughout. Still a typical rye top, without much bitter or tart aftertaste, and a good steady finish. I'm still not in love with Rye's in general, but this is clearly something better than average. I'll go high 60s with a note that if you're a rye-lover, give this a go. | ||||||||||||||||||||
