Tasting # 388: Looking for Single Malt Scotch on the cheap?  (07-SEP-2009)
NotesHave we got a deal for you. Now you might tend toward the very inexpensive Link to another review Speyburn 10, but wait. For 5 dollars more and, admittedly, 2 years less, you get a much better glass. True, it's a bit more fair than lovely or wonderful, but should you be stuck at $30 and demand a single malt, I guess this is the one to get.

Impression
Not a fan of the tin colors. I don't know whose tartan this is, but don't take it personally: ugh. The stag and the rest of it is pretty enough.
SmellMalt and citrus in good quantities. Sharp, though. Grapefruit and confectioners sugar over a big, big malt base and a thin smoke top. Honey at the end.
TasteNicer than I expected. There's a sharp, woody midsection but it ends well and has a good set of flavors. This is well worth thirty bucks as a second glass scotch. Begins with a good malty stretch that goes sharp and tart quickly. The top can be saved, but you lose the nice finish so you have to kind of pick where you want the water. I'd go with a few drops of water, just try not to drown the finish. Anyway, the citrus in the top and fade are signs of youth, but they merge well with the barley malt and just a tiny bit of smoke. Then you're into a finish that deserves a much nicer whisky introduction. Recommendable but not quite reaching 70.
