Tasting # 386: Ever elusive BenRiach  (31-AUG-2009)
NotesI've seen this 10YO version at a few liquor store haunts and it vanished each time before I came back for it. BenRiach is a storied distillery with sales, closings and a litany of odd ownerships that affected the quality and notoriety. My Link to another reviewlast Benriach was a lovely peated dram while this one goes all sugary sweet.

Hate this bottle. The other version with the picture of the distillery is much nicer. Hell, the back of the label and parts of the box are even nicer.
SmellOoooh Kaaay. There's some cream cheese... carrot cake icing to be specific, but the overwhelming flavor is caramel. It's candy-level sweet and there's a steady, prickle that feels like inhaling on a very cold day. The foundation scent is... odd. Barley and such but there's a very mossy, herbal flavor that peeks out at times. Mostly a ton of caramel, though.
TasteYep. Caramel. Needs water and a psychiatrist. There is love here, brief and tantalizing moments of joy where the wall of caramel ebbs and a warm, creamy cinnamon roll and orange zest in a wood paneled room is waiting. Then the caramel washes back in and you're in sugar shock. Add enough water and you finally defeat the caramel only to find you've washed out much of what's left. Bothersome because when you do find that joy (mostly in the fade) it inspires very high scores. In the end, it not recommendable and should be bought only if you like playing with your Scotch and water levels.
