Tasting # 384: My second SV mystery distillery  (24-AUG-2009)
NotesMy Link to another review prior SV from this line was easy to identify, what with there being exactly one distillery to choose from. Now given three distilleries from the Lowlands, I'm forced to admit some level of defeat. I -think- it's a young Auchentoshan, but I can't be certain given my limited exposure to the other Lowlanders: Glenkinchie and the admittedly unlikely Bladnoch, I can't be certain. In any case, this wasn't a bad buy, cheap and easy to drink. I know, backhanded praise but I've been a bit spoiled for choices in the high-end arena thanks to the recent tastings and my friend Scott's SMWS contributions.

Impression
Hate the bottle, but I guess teal is better than the pink Mull one. One added note: the cap is a chintzy screw-on. The tin foil around some bottle tops is thicker than this thing. Yeesh.
SmellStraw and raw oatmeal, not much bite, fairly clean. Comes off as a bit blendy, but that's likely due to it being a Lowlander and a tad young. Something fruity-sweet in the top, almost a rye or apple note. I must admit I'm building up a tiny bit of enthusiasm.
TasteIt's dry and floral, so typical Lowlander in the opening. Straw again with just a tiny bit of barley flour. Build gets a touch edgy and it tops out with dry grass and figs, our first appearance of any real wood and a slightly tart rye. The fade becomes a little astringent and we're into a very mild, leisurely finish. I can't quite recommend this, there are a few flaws in the middle and nothing steps in to thrill or challenge. That said, it's still something you can easily pour and sip.
