Tasting # 353: Well of COURSE it's a limited, one time special event version.  (27-APR-2009)
NotesOld Forrester's 75th Anniversary of Prohibition bourbon was limited to something like 3000 cases and comes in a cool box with a Glen Cairn glass and copy of the repeal of prohibition. It also holds the distinction of being the first whisky I've actually mentioned in a news post and then managed to find, albeit by pure chance. So since I can never find another version and by the time you read this you won't be able to either, OF COURSE it is, without question, the best bourbon of the 45 that I have tasted. Now I'm forced to decide between drinking it and keeping it forever in a little shrine in my liquor cabinet. Damn you, Old Forrester.

Impression
Well the bottle is awesome and the Glen Cairn glass just adds to the joy. I love these things. I got one with Penderyn and it quickly became my default tasting glass.
SmellAt the full 100p this packs a whallop. Mostly candy corn. And that's one of those spot-on, no hesitation nose reads, too. The prickle is there, warning all who might dive in to check the label first, and a dusty, oat and pine scent. Just a touch, mind you. Steady on. The candy and brown sugar scents are just huge. There's so much vanilla and raw cane sugar and top grade molasses that I'm really in awe. There's more, buried deep down under some unsalted butter is big hardwood sawdust and a monster of tight raisin and chilies. This is what bourbon should always smell like.
TasteNice, and amazing, but too much. The burn washes out the glimpse of very sugary flavor and you're numb for a moment. Moving on to the water. Ye gods, tis heaven. The sweet, candied coconut opening washes in and softens you up for the maple syrup, raisin and smokey barbecued beef rib flavor that follows. This is almost assuredly the best bourbon I've ever had. The top is sharp, but you expect with all this wood and smoke that something has to turn. The shift back to toasted coconut and coconut cake is fantastic and you slip through a quicksilver fade of leather into a warm blanket of pumpernickel toast and oak. Wonderful finish, almost peat in texture, I feel like I should be able to spread this over bread. Enormous, fantastic. Damn you Old Forrester for making this a limited release! I am lingering on a 90 for the score. There's just so much here to love, so many flavors.
