Tasting # 298: Finally, the Sheep hit the Dip  (27-AUG-2008)
NotesIn a town just across the bridge there is a very nice store that carries Sheep Dip and I have held that bottle in my hand many times only to put it down and buy something a bit more... well. Lets just say that dipping animals is generally a process done to remove parasites. There's a tale that the Brits disparaged whisky by calling it Sheep Dip and that the Scots adopted it as a cheeky nickname. That's great, but we yanks have no understanding of this tradition and tend to handle anything labeled as an animal dip with latex gloves.

Sheep Dip, eh? The bottle photo is pretty awful, a herd of sheep being herded off camera to be dipped, I assume. Then that dip is bottled and sent to me, to follow this to a logical conclusion.
SmellCrisp rye and grass, very tangy and citric. There's a bit more grass and a lot less lemon zest and rye if you swirl and give it a few moments to settle out.
TasteVery young and zesty. The intro is full of grass and very, very sharp barley. Young, I guess. There's a bit of lemon cookie and a light woody lift into the top where there's grass and spice. I'm happy so far, but the fade and finish are less wonderful. Rye peeks in and there's a slight souring of all the grass. Not awful, mind you, but it was a fun, zippy lift in the front. I'm having to play with it a little to get the sour effect, and it isn't awful, so not too many points off there. The finish is pure grass and hay and light barley. Fair flavors and it holds out well. I'm rather happy overall with this one, and since I don't dock for bottles or names the Dip holds it's low 70 score.
