Tasting # 224: Ledaig of the overwhelming Sherry  (21-JAN-2008)
NotesLink to another reviewLedaig SF tastes like someone poured a pint of sherry into the bottle. It isn't normally a bad flavor, but at these levels it's a distraction and has little else to save it. I also realize that 2008 has been a string of Scotches, a trend that will continue until Friday.
SmellThey're not kidding about "sherry" on the label. There's a big wave of it with a nice creamy peat that sneaks in underneath. Aside from these two major players I'm getting something nutty and almost a whisky sour flavor. Interesting.
TasteThe peat and sherry open, the peat is low and creamy; a nice undercurrent of warmth. The sherry however is absolutely overwhelming, leaning towards a tawny port and really just washing over everything in an offputting sticky wave. In the middle is something else. Not sure, warm and perhaps malty, but I can't get a handle on it in this sea of sherry. Toward the top the peat becomes smoke and expands nicely, some Islay influence here=> salt and a touch of iodine. Just enough (especially since I'm not a fan of iodine);. This sours everything slightly, and with all this sherry I'm not really getting the full feel of the midsection. The sherry finally moves back in the fade and I can feel around. Something about the peat is a touch off, but the finish ends decent=> sesame seeds, smoky and creamy peat and just enough of that early overdose of sherry to actually savor a bit. Not an particularly good glass, the sherry unbalances everything and there are a number of iffy flavors lurking just beyond that sweet wall. Low 50s.
