| Tasting # 214: Chivas Century of Malts (26-DEC-2007) | |||||||||||||||||||||
| Notes | These are disappearing from shelves at a rapid pace, which is a shame because the complexity and flavor makes it well worth the price tag. I can do little more than look forward to Chivas' next special release. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| Smell | A very light licorice flavor sneaks out around a sea of malt and grass. Nicely layered and very steady. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| Taste | Wow. Just... huge. It starts with a solid oak and cedar representing the woods, malt and rolled oats for the grains and some light grassy flavors. This builds and builds to the expanding peak. Sherry takes center stage here with a few light nuts flanking. The wood returns at the end of the peak and leads you into a huge... is that just a touch of peat? Creamy and warm... anyway, if the fade is big, the finish is huge. Still a ton of sherry here, held at bay only by the will of the peat-touched oak and big barley. I'm at a loss for faults in this vatting. It's a huge glass with great feel and a flavor set that I'm probably barely touching. Truly a lost treasure, low 90s. | ||||||||||||||||||||
