Tasting # 186: Eagle Rare should be your house bourbon  (08-OCT-2007)
NotesThe tops of the practicality chart are nearly bursting with 99 point all stars and Link to another reviewEagle Rare 10 SB joins the pack. A truly spectacular Bourbon and a downright steal at $30 a bottle. If you like bourbon and haven't grabbed this one: go! Go now!
SmellVery nice, warm and woody. I'm getting walnuts, brown sugar, ginger and a very potent honey. There's a great char base and a steady balance. Here's hoping!
TasteJust a touch too potent, but it still pulls off a good dram at full go. It opens smooth and warm, honey and vanilla sit silky and steady over a potent wood and toffee middle. The prickle becomes overpowering in the top end where all the spice and smoke vanishes. The fade and finish are luxurious, so I'm going to touch this with the tiniest drop or two of water and hope for things to reach the heights I'm hoping for.

Wow. That's some good stuff there. The sweet vanilla and toffee are still here with a whole shelf of spice to go along with the wood and smoke. The front end is still sweet and woody flavors that build through a light smoke to a leather and candy apple top. Theres a bit of rye going into the fade with just a slight warning of vinegar that's there and gone as we find ourselves in a woody and nutty slip into the long finish.

Be extra careful if you add water, it only takes a drop to cut that slight edge of 45%. I let this one sit for a few moments and added a bare touch of water to get the best results. This is one of the best bourbons I've had, silky and honest, steady and warm. There's nothing to dislike and plenty of good flavors. This will absolutely crack 80 points.

I agree. It's more or less on level with JW green!

Wow. A tiny drop of water does unbelievable things to this bourbon. My new favorite american spirit. @ $25 a bottle, this is a steal.

I think that this is pretty similar to Buffalo Trace which I've heard is nine years old and is less expensive. Don't get me wrong, Eagle Rare is really smooth and very well balanced.
