| Tasting # 83: Friday Leftovers V: Two Mini Balvenies (23-FEB-2007) | |||||||||||||||||||||
| Notes | A Trio of Balvenies has finally become mine (precious) and will allow me to update Every Balvenie I have. The first two are the youngest. The scores don't change, although it was nice to get better pictures and notes for some of the oldest tastings on the list. The 15 is, in fact, the first review from the legacy list and the 12 is long overdue for a full retaste. The 21 is going on the shelf for a tasting in the near future. | ||||||||||||||||||||

| Taste | Wow, I've waited far to long to retaste this. The opening is smooth and warm, brimming with sweet sherry and wood flavors. There's a deep, powerful foundation of scotch goodness, a well of wood and malt warmth. The fade into her finish is fast, but it brings in lingering caramel and a sweetness that's not quite vanilla ice cream. This one had less burn than I remembered, maybe my tolerance has gone up or this batch is smoother. Either way, it deserves every bit of its 82 points. I'm hesitant to move it much higher only because there are better glasses, but you'll pay a pretty penny for them. Widely available, tremendously enjoyable and incredibly economical, this is an easy choice for your single malt needs. This might just be the epitome of single malt practical whisky. | ||||||||||||||||||||

| Tasting # 11: Archive Review: Balvenie Doublewood 12 YO (01-OCT-2005) | |||||||||||||||||||||
| Notes | Archived Review | ||||||||||||||||||||
| Smell | Warm and woody, sweet sherry and oak and grains. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| Taste | Sweet, warm and long. The Balvenie 12 DW is one of my first recommendations for any new explorer of the Scotch landscape or a mixer looking to upgrade. There is warm mulled wine and wood taste with a perfect layer of smoky warmth underneath; like warm cake holding up icing. There's a bit more burn than the fantastic 21 year old, especially in the early finish, but given the youth and price it's more than tolerable. | ||||||||||||||||||||
